The Indiana Department of Environmental Management recognized Lake County Surveyor Bill Emerson Jr. for his management of the county’s storm water quality plan.

The state credited Emerson, who took office last year, and his staff with improving county storm drainage by working with the County Soil and Water District for implementation of the cover crop program to reduce erosion in some south county farm fields.

He also was credited with working with the County Fair Board to create rain gardens at the fairground and working with private property owners to maintain Searle Ditch so that it may accommodate a larger flood event.

Searle Ditch is a half-mile long man-made waterway that drains a small area southwest of Lowell.
